Established Theory:
A cultures written record can be used for dating geological events but is only limited to the time frame of the writing. This can be helpful in documenting the age of a volcanic eruption, flood, earthquake, etc. As recorded history only began about 5,000 years ago this method of dating is limited to that time frame only.
Alternative Theory:
For the Young Earth advocate this is probably the most important factor in dating the geological record. The Bible as God's word is the foundation of creation geology. Since the Biblical record indicates an age of 6,000 years then the scientific data must confirm this.
