A tried and true Bible Dictionary. This is one of the oldest Bible Dictionaries and is still useful today. Virtually every person, place and subject in the Bible is covered by this book. When studying the Ancient Hebrew culture, I have found that it helps to have several different Bible dictionaries as one will cover something that the others do not. At this price, this is one well worth adding to your library.

Smith describes the important people and places of the Bible, as well as the major teachings of Scripture. An additional section contains 4,000 questions and answers.

About the Author: Top

Dr. William Smith, noted English theologian and scholar, completed his original three-volume dictionary in 1863. The Peloubets' revision seamlessly condenses Smith's original work into one compact volume adding information gleaned from archeological discoveries and geographical advances unavailable for the original edition.

Smith's Bible Dictionary (Revised Edition) is not a mere collection of definitions of biblical terms, but is replete with details about the Bible, its history, and its setting.

Elaborates on geographical locations, historical facts, meanings of names, customs, etc. that are not found in other cross-references. For example, the description of the Urim and the Thummim in Ex. 28:30. It's a great addition to any reference books you may have in your library to assist you in your quest to understand God's Word.

Smith's Bible dictionary is a comprehensive and complete bible dictionary nearly any word you can find in the bible is in here. Smith's bible dictionary not only gives a basic difinition but also an indepth explanation of the usage and where appropreate an explanation of it's symbolic meaning(s). An additional plus is that nearly every page has at least one well drawn black and white illustration or diagram given further insight into the geography, characters and meaning of biblical events.

Want to know about how Hebrews could become slaves to each other? Or exactly what the ancient Holy Days were all about? How about the various foods, plants, clothing and jewelry mentioned in the Old Testament? Smith's, the quintessential Bible dictionary, will add a context to your in depth Bible study that will cement imagery in your head that will make your studies more productive and your memories more vivid and long-lasting. And when it comes to the Bible, context is everything. We are so far removed from our religious ancestors in time and culture that to rely simply on the Bible text is to fail to understand those wonderful people.

This book is great and easy to use. Though illustrations and pictures are not in colored, readers may find it very useful. I hope that revisions on this book will not lessen its quality from its original publication.
