Dead Sea Scroll

[Return to Index]

By Jeff A. Benner

Description: Many of the Dead Sea Scrolls are written in the Late Semitic script. However, the second word from the right on the bottom line is the Tetragrammaton (YHVH/Yahweh - the name of God) written in the middle Semitic script. This was commonly done in order to preserve the more ancient form of the name.

Comments: While the text is written in a late Semitic script, the second word from the right on the bottom line is the Tetragrammaton (YHVH/Yahweh - the name of God) written in middle Semitic script. This was commonly done in order to preserve the more ancient form of the name. For a similar occurence in the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible see this example from the Septuagint.
